Artaturi (Lošinj)

Artaturi (Lošinj)

Artaturi (Artatore) offers a combination of pleasant anchorage and vibrant town life. This large, deeply recessed bay, with several arms, provides good shelter from the tramontana and summer squalls, and is only four miles from the waterfront in Mali Lošinj. There is also a road to Lošinj. So if you fancy a spot of night life or need to do some shopping during the day, and have a decent dinghy, it should not be a problem. Just make sure the forecast does not predict a jugo, because the entire bay will then be exposed to the wind, except for the most westerly arm. In such weather conditions, it is best to leave the bay. The most secluded arms have beaches and there are several houses, concealed in the dense woods, with jetties in front. Some have buoys, like the one in front of one of our favourite restaurants, Artatore. If you stop in Artaturi Bay, do not miss out on a fine meal prepared by super-chef Janja Zabavnik. Anchor in the inner section of the bay, in the middle of the east arm, where the sandy bed is about 10 metres deep, because it is too shallow by the shore. The other arms are full of anchor chains and there is only room for smaller boats. Watch out for the tongue of reefs underwater, stretching from the point to the centre of the bay. The sea bream here are so used to visitors that they have become quite tame. As soon as you drop anchor, a shoal will appear, hoping for a crust of bread. If you jump in for a swim, they will circle you, completely fearless of your presence.
