The next two bays as we sail east towards the town of Rab are the largest on Kalifront peninsula. They are very popular with day-trippers during the summer and also with sailors anchoring overnight. The first is Ćifnata, recessed almost a mile inland, providing good shelter from all winds except the jugo (the prevalent winds are W and NW) during the summer months. A good place to anchor is in the sand about half way down the bay, where the depth is about 5 metres. If you drop anchor in the middle of the bay, you can tie up to one of the shores, depending on the wind. As you venture further, the depth reduces sharply to only one metre. There is a beach at the base of the bay, and a chapel on the west point, with a little jetty in front. The woods, mostly holly oak, with the odd pine, olive, ash and downy oak, reach down to the sea. The bay is uninhabited and deserted, apart from bathers. In contrast to Ćifnata, there are a score of houses in Gožinka, the northwest section, with a jetty in front of them, and here you will find a tavern well known for its cured ham, which can be reached by walking through the woods from Ćifnata. Gožinka is not as deeply recessed, but shares the same characteristics as its neighbour. It is slightly more exposed to the southwest and a little shallower. At the base, it divides into two arms, with a sandy beach in the easterly arm. You should anchor in the middle, in the sandy bed covered with sea grass, at a depth of about 4 metres. Further towards Rab is another cove, Matovica, which is rather built up, with a hotel and several houses. The shore of Kalifront is good for fishing. I have often used long lines here from the dinghy in the early morning or evening. I have always caught something, though never any really large fish.
