Maračol (Unije)

Maračol (Unije)

When I sailed into this large, sheltered bay on the NE shore of Unije at seven o’clock one evening in August a few years ago, I was sure I would make fast to a buoy. A month earlier, we had taken aerial photos for a new publication and I had counted fifty. But when I got there, not only were there no free buoys, but there were another thirty boats sitting at anchor. I had never seen so many before. Yes, it was the Italian ferragosto, and most of the Italians were on their way home, hoping to spend another night or two at anchor in peace and quiet. I thought then that it would not be long before this bay would be regularly full to overflowing. Of course, a month earlier, or even a few days later, I would have glimpsed a different picture. Maračol is well sheltered and deeply recessed, exposed only to the east wind, and sheltered even from this in its most deeply recessed parts. This is why it was previously used as an army storage facility by the Yugoslav National Army, and the remains of an abandoned building and a tall, concrete dock in the centre of the western shore are still there to remind us. When the army left, it became a nautical paradise, particularly for those who enjoy solitude, since there are no facilities whatsoever. If you need any supplies, you will have to trek over the hill to the village of Unije, which will take you about twenty minutes. There you can enjoy a good meal at Kod Palmire. But most sailors stay with their boats and enjoy swimming or watching other people and their boats, especially if they happen to have half-naked female passengers. Since there was no room in Maračol, I had the choice of two neighbouring, smaller, less sheltered bays; Podkujni and Vognišća. However, the weather forecast was good, and the sandy bottom in Maračol holds well, at a depth of almost 20 metres in the outer section of the bay, so I decided to drop anchor there. My decision was justified. No more boats arrived to drop anchor right under our noses, and we spent a peaceful, romantic night at anchor.
