A series of a dozen bays where you can easily drop anchor stretches from the south side of Kalifront peninsula, and we have chosen the best three, which display the beauties of this part of the island. There are not many buildings, and when the day-trippers leave in the late afternoon, you will have the place to yourself. Two miles west of Kanitaj Point, sailing past Litovica, Planka and some smaller coves, you will reach Sveta Mara Bay, the best shelter on the shore of Kalifront. In the olden days, when everyone was under sail, it provided shelter for sailing ships, which would drop anchor here and tie up stern to shore, waiting for the bura from the Gates of Senj, one of the fiercest Adriatic winds, to die down. They would then continue on their route towards the northern Adriatic harbours. There are still stone columns carved by sailors on the shore dating back to this era, and you can reach them by swimming or taking the dinghy. Although the bay is not as pretty as Ćifnata or Kristofor, it is a peaceful place to stay at anchor for a few days. There are two arms, west and east, both equally suitable for anchoring. Of course, the west arm is better during the bura, and the east during the jugo. The west arm is about 5 metres deep in the middle, while the east arm is about 7 metres deep, and the bed is sandy. There is a nice beach at the base of the bay, with a jetty, but the depth by the jetty is only one metre. If you hear voices from the shore, they will belong to students and staff of the Zagreb Forestry Faculty, who maintain this unique forest. The faculty building is hidden deep in the holly oak forest. A few paces in front of the building, on the east shore of the bay, are the ruins of a chapel built for the mariners who used to anchor here. Miljenko Domijan, a local Rab man, and a well know Croatian conservationist, has begun the task of protecting and renovating the chapel.
