Almost any sailor who has sailed around Vis will tell you that no other island has such a beautiful coastline. They are usually referring to the stretch between Vis and Komiža, going east along the south shore, as there are several bays and islets, and during the summer, it is a popular sailing destination. The north side of the island offers a shorter, direct route to Komiža. But there are also three pretty bays on that side. From west to east, these are Tiha, Slatine and Gradac. I prefer the first, Tiha, particularly when the south side of the island gets congested and it is hard to find a place to drop anchor in Stončica, Rukavec, or by Budihovac. Tiha is well sheltered from the maestral and jugo, and is a good place to anchor at a depth of around 10 metres, in the sandy bed covered in sea grass. You can swim here all day long. There are several old houses and holiday homes in the bay. If you want complete isolation, go to the next bay, Slatine, which is recessed inland and ends in a pretty beach. The third bay, Gradac, is also uninhabited, through there are some old, abandoned houses here. It would be nice to see them restored to their former glory.
