Ten years ago, I caught a fine dentex in Porat. There are plenty left in the waters along the shore of Biševo. If you prefer to eat in a restaurant, there are two in the largest cove on the west side of the island. The one above the beach is called Srečko’s, and the other, a beautifully designed tavern called Porat, run by the Komiža hotel company, is on the beach itself. Both restaurants are rather exotic, yet serve local fare. You can find fresh lobster, mullet and grouper on the menu. Since the bay is exposed to the west, there are waves when the maestral blows hard, but it is only dangerous during an E wind, and then you should leave the bay. In 1986, during a severe squall, the last remaining example of a Komiža fishing boat, the Cicibela, was badly damaged, but can be seen today in the Komiža fishing museum. Nevertheless, if the weather is good, you can anchor safely in Porat. Do so about a hundred metres from the beach at the base of the bay, at a depth of around 10 metres, in the sandy bed, covered in sea grass. You will be joined by about 10 boats in summer, but there is room for them all, if they anchor sensibly. Porat itself is a small village, with only a dozen houses, used during the summer months by their owners or Slovenian tourists, who are their favourite guests. There used to be forests and undergrowth right down to the sea, but in 2003, these were destroyed by fire, which ravaged the entire island. The vegetation is being replaced gradually, thanks to determined efforts.
