This bay is better known as a good place to swim than as a favourite anchorage for sailors. Most sailors tend to choose Vis and Komiža as evening destinations. Vis has a large harbour, with enough room on the waterfronts to accommodate more than 100 boats, and there is also room to drop anchor. But if you prefer solitude, Stončica is the place. I remember when there were only two or three houses in this bay. In contrast to neighbouring bays, it has not lost its character with the passage of time. It is still dominated by the lighthouse on Stončica Point, rising 38 metres above sea level. The opposite point, Stračine, protects Stončicu and Čavojnica Cove. Stončica is recessed almost half a mile inland, and is sheltered from all winds. You should anchor in the south part, at a depth of between 5 and 15 metres. The bed is sandy and purchase is poor. Make sure the anchor digs in well, and tie up stern to shore, particularly if it is busy in the bay. There is a lovely sandy beach at the base of the bay. The sea is crystal clear. The bay boasts one of the best restaurants on Vis, run by the Lincir brothers. They serve fish, of course, but you should also try the excellent grilled meat and the roasts. They rear their own goats on their farm nearby. Stanko Selak, the famous trumpeter, has a holiday home in the bay, and if you are lucky, you might hear him playing for his own pleasure as night falls.
