Pokrivenik is the largest bay on the stretch of the north shore of Hvar between Jelsa and Sućuraj, and is the only one suitable for anchoring. However, you should avoid it if the bura is blowing. As you sail in, watch out for the shallows by Tanki Point at the west entrance to the bay. This is a particularly beautiful bay, more than a kilometre long, shaped like a funnel, tapering inland. The most recessed part is flanked by tall, steep cliffs, and at the base of the bay, there is a large beach covered in white pebbles, with vineyards and olive groves beyond it. Just above sea level is Badan cave, on the west side of the bay. There are a few houses in all five arms. During the day, the bay fills up with bathers from nearby Zastražišće, and some even arrive on speedboats from Makarska, Tučepi or Podgora. If there is no bura, this is great place to drop anchor and have a swim. I usually do so about a hundred metres from the beach, at a depth of 10 metres. The bed is sandy, covered in sea grass. There are two restaurants in Pokrivenik – one in Hotel Timun on the east point, and the other run by the Fistonić family in the middle arm on the west side of the bay. I always eat there. They serve fresh fish on the small restaurant terrace. Just to the west of Pokrivenik is Kruševa Bay, which also has a small beach, and is a good place to drop anchor if the maestral is blowing.
