This popular anchorage is the harbour for Banjole village, where one of the ugliest, most inappropriate tourist buildings has been erected – the overambitious Volme holiday apartment complex which has completely destroyed the charm of the bay. There used to be a fish-processing factory in Banjole. It closed a long time ago, but there are still plenty of fishermen, catching oily fish and crustaceans, whose spawning ground is near Verudela Point. The fishing fleet is moored on the jetty on the NW side of the harbour. Paltana is so calm it feels like a lake. The bura can be felt, but does not create waves. The worst weather is during a strong SW wind, when the wind and sea can both be uncomfortable. If necessary, you can make fast to the former military stone jetty on the south side of the bay. The only problem is that there is virtually nowhere to go from the jetty, apart from into thick undergrowth (some of the juiciest wild asparagus in the area grows here), so be careful, because it is home to vipers and adders. The bay is almost a kilometre deep and about 400 metres wide, and the bed is more silt than sand, but only two thirds of it is deeper than 4 metres. Behind the apartment complex, you will see the lonely little church of Madonna of Volme, probably dating back to the early Middle Ages. On 8 September every year (the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary) there is a colourful religious procession to the church. West of the main pier and haven there is a boatyard with a proper hoist, so if you need any urgent repairs, they can be carried out here. Above the bay on the north side is one of the best restaurants in the area, Batelina, managed by Danilo Skoko, himself a fisherman. Sailors anchoring in Paltana and eager for a splendid evening meal will find the best of the Banjole fishing tradition in his restaurant.
