The last anchorage on the east coast of Istria is Prklog Bay, near the village of Sveti Marin. It is recessed about a mile inland, with few inhabitants and only a score of houses in the middle of the shore, which is covered in undergrowth. At the base of the bay, there is a lovely sandy beach, used by locals from Raša and Labin. It is not very busy, because yachts sailing from Opatija tend to head straight for Krk and Cres. So you will find peace and quiet and an unpolluted stretch of shoreline, though there is nothing of any particular interest. The entire area between this bay, Labin and Rabac has been declared a landscape of special interest, because of the forests of holly oak and pine, interspersed with meadows. Since the outer section of the bay is 40 metres deep, you should anchor further in, about 400 metres from the shore. The bed is silty and holds well. However, I would only recommend it in stable weather. The bay is exposed to the jugo and the bura creates eddies. In such circumstances, it is best to move on. Just north of Prklog is the wide harbour of Rabac, a tourist destination which is growing in popularity, where the local fishing fleet is moored. However, this harbour is also exposed to the jugo, apart from in the west arm, though it offers better protection from the bura. So if the jugo is blowing, stay in Raša Bay. There is plenty of shelter there.
