Mali Lago (Lastovo)

Mali Lago (Lastovo)

Like its larger companion, Veli Lago, Mali Lago is bordered on one side by Lastovo, and on the other by Prežba island, and is linked to Lastovo by a bridge, which the locals calls Pasadura. This marks the boundary between Veli and Mali Lago. The very name, which comes from the Italian for a lake, describes the sheltered nature of both bays, particularly the SW section of Mali Lago. On the shore of Prežba, in the part known as Podlenga, a small resort has sprung up, where the more enterprising inhabitants of the island have built tourist accommodation. There are fewer houses on the shore of Lastovo. On the west shore, the locals have built up the waterfront and use it to moor their boats, but there are also places for visitors, particularly for boats with a shallow draught. During the summer, there are lots of Italians in dinghies, some of them large enough to sleep in. A real sailor will relish the opportunity to drop anchor here. If you do so close to Pasadura, the depth is about 6 metres, and if you go a little further east, you will need sufficient anchor chain to drop to 17 metres. Be careful not to drop anchor in the area extending from Leng Point, because there is a cable running from here to the opposite shore. The bed is mostly sandy everywhere, and you will feel as though you are in the heart of the place. During the day, there will be quite a lot of traffic around you, but you will be quite safe. If large yachts sail in, they usually keep to the outer section of the bay, opposite Prehodišće arm, with its few houses at the base of the bay. Here you can anchor at a depth of 30 metres, in the rocky bed. Smaller boats also anchor here, usually below the north point, Prehodišće Point, where they drop anchor and tie up stern to shore. You can also anchor in complete solitude in Borova Bay, at the entrance to Mali Lago, but remember that it is exposed to NE winds. If you want to go somewhere to eat, the restaurant on Prežba is close at hand, and there is a pleasant tavern in the hotel in the shade of the ancient pines. The hotel also has a well managed diving centre, so if you want to explore the Lastovo underwater world, contact them.
