The deep bay of Vela Luka, although exposed to W winds, conceals some good anchorage spots. Most sailors anchor at the base of the bay, in front of the village waterfront, where yachts, fishing boats and tourist boats are moored. If you do not want to be so close to civilisation, and prefer a romantic atmosphere and a pleasant swim, choose Gradina Bay, on the north shore of Vela Luka Bay. It is well sheltered from N, E and S winds, but less sheltered from W and SW winds. The peninsula of Sveti Ivan offers some protection on the SW side, and the pretty island of Gubeša on W side. You can sail round the island on either side. Anchor anywhere in the bay, but I think the best spot is in the south section, where you will be partially protected from the maestral. There are some new houses on the shore, mostly holiday homes, with little jetties in front. The maximum depth in the bay is 6 metres, the bed is sandy, and there is sea grass in some places. The turquoise sea is clear and unpolluted – ideal for bathing. If it is busy, try anchoring in front of the hotel in Plitvina bay, in the sandy bed covered in sea grass, which is a mile to the east.
