This horseshoe-shaped island is the ninth in a chain ranging from the northwest, one after another, in front of the entrance to Hramina, the main harbour on Murter. It is a wonderful area to anchor in and spend the night, if the weather is good, from the most northerly island of Artica, with its lighthouse, to the largest in the chain, Arta Vela. The water is shallow between the islands and the bed is sandy, which makes the experience even more memorable. You can reach Betina and Murter from the northwest, between the shores of these islands (watch out for the shallows marked by lit posts), but most sailors set a course from the west side of the islands, passing by Žminjak. Its most southerly point is the busiest part of these waters, for those with a draught of over one metre have no other option in sailing to Hramina or Betina, so we can safely call this location the Gates of Murter. (Hramina is the name of the bay and the old part of the village, which until the beginning of the 20th century boasted only a few fishing huts, while the village of Murter itself is a little higher, on the hill. Nowadays, everyone calls Hramina Murter. South and southeast of Žminjak are Veliki and Mali Vinik and Tegina. In the passage between Murter and Veliki Vinik, the depth is around 1.5 metres, but between Veli Vinik and Tegina it reduces to less than a metre, so a safer course out to sea is between Žminjak and Veli Vinik, rounding the north point of Tegina, with its lighthouse. On the southwest side of Žminjak, where lovely olive groves adorn the wide bay, there is fairly good shelter from the bura and E winds, and to some extent from the maestral. The depth in the middle of the bay is only 4.5 metres, and the sandy bed is partially covered in sea grass. There are houses on the shore in the middle of the bay, and a restaurant with a long pontoon jetty anchored in front. The restaurant owner has placed several buoys in the bay.
