There are several bays on the northwest shore of Ugljan which are suitable for anchoring. The two best known are two and a half miles apart, but taken together, form a good combination, as one is exposed to the south, and the other to the northwest. Muline is a wide, open bay, with a village of the same name, sheltered to the south by Pavlešina Point. It is a beautiful place, and the sea is always clear, due to the currents running through Veli Ždrilec. Anchor in the south section of the bay, in the sandy bed, at a depth of between 5 and 10 metres, or use one of the buoys. The village dates back to classical times, when the Romans produced olive oil here. The remains of the Roman waterfront are still visible, and archaeologists have discovered several stone presses from that period. There are several taverns on the waterfront. If the maestral or tramontana is blowing, there is room for some boats to move to Pavlešina Cove, on the other side of the point. Prkljug is a smaller bay, with two arms, on the southwest shore of Ugljan. The larger arm points northwest, and the smaller northeast. Anchor in the northwest arm at a depth of between 4 and 5 metres. The bed is sandy, partially covered in sea grass, and provides good purchase. The bay is exposed to S winds, but is well sheltered from W and N winds. It is virtually uninhabited, so if you choose to anchor here, you can do so in solitude. There are a few holiday homes in the western section, and several more in the east arm, where there are some fishing warehouses, which have been turned into tourist accommodation, with little jetties in front, rather like a Kornati village. There are fishing boats in front of the houses, so you can buy fresh fish.
