Brbinj is another picture postcard anchorage. It is lovely as you sail in, but when you tie up by the wooded peninsula of Koromašnjak, you will be overwhelmed by the views, fragrances, sounds of the sea, dense woods, rocks and crickets chirping on the shore. This beauty spot was discovered a long time ago and sailors and nautical entrepreneurs have made the most of it. There are buoys anchored parallel to the beach and when you reach them, you should also tie up stern to shore. Boats are anchored rather close together, but you might be lucky and like your neighbours. Once you have secured your boat, enjoy a bathe in Brbinj Bay, which has three arms, and is fairly deep in the middle, around 40 metres, so go further towards the base. In the western arm is the village of Brbinj, with a post office, shop and restaurant, Antonio’s. The local postmaster and his wife used to run all three, so you sometimes had to wait to be served in the shop on the ground floor while the postmaster saw to another customer in the Post Office upstairs. Now they have retired and run the restaurant. In the southern part of the bay, Strižnja, there are some newer houses, surprisingly in keeping with the surroundings, and a little jetty, and in the eastern part, Ilo, there is a pretty beach. The whole bay is well-sheltered, unless the bura is blowing hard, to which the outer section is exposed. It measures half a mile from end to end, so you can get around easily in a dinghy. Another bay, Lučina, also belongs to Brbinj village. It is large and extends a kilometre inland, exposed to the NW, though to some extent sheltered by the islet of Utra. But there is insufficient shelter during the tramontana or bura. You can sail into Lučina from both sides. It is not as pretty as Brbinj, but it is a large, well-organised anchorage. It is shallower, so you can anchor in the sandy bed, partially covered in sea grass, at a depth of between 4 and 12 metres, and there are also buoys available. There are two taverns on the shore, one at the base of the bay, and the other on the ferry dock. Both are good, but sailors prefer the village tavern, Šjor Bepo.
