The area between the old city harbour of Dubrovnik, the mainland and the island of Lokrum is one of the best known anchorages on the eastern Adriatic coast. True, sailors cannot anchor in the central section, as this is reserved for cruise ships and mega-yachts, with the permission and according to the protocol of the port authorities. However, many smaller boats and yachts anchor around Lokrum, or in the NW section in front of the civic beach, Banje, between Kaše breakwater and Hotel Excelsior. In spite of the fantastic view of the old harbour, St. John’s Fortress, Revelin and Lazarete, I would recommend you to anchor during the day close to Lokrum, as you will be disturbed all day long, even if the sea is calm, by the swell created by tourist boats going in and out of the harbour, and boats ferrying passengers back and forth to their cruise ships. The best place to anchor is in Portoć Bay, or along the shoreline west of this bay, where you can tie up stern to shore. These spots are well sheltered from W and NW winds, which are prevalent in summer, and you will be able to have a swim, along with the tourists on their excursion boats. You should take the dinghy to the island itself, and walk among its avenues of tree and olive groves, visit the Benedictine monastery, Maksimilian’s Palace, and Fort Royal, from where you will have a panoramic view. Be careful when anchoring. Although the bed is sandy in Portoć Bay, it is 15 metres deep a little further out, and the bed is covered in rocks and crevices, which may snag the anchor. So use an anchor weight and float. In the early evening, the whole area calms down. The cruise ships depart, and there is only the local passenger boat to Lokrum, so if you have anchored in front of Banje beach, you will be able to sit in the cockpit and enjoy the view of the old city, or take the dinghy to the foot of the city walls, and enter the mystical atmosphere of Dubrovnik at night. This area is exposed to S winds, and you should avoid it if these winds are blowing. There is a fee for anchoring in front of Banje beach, and beneath Lokrum, apart from in Portoč Bay. The prices range from €1.60 to €3.50 per metre length, depending on the time of year.
