Although you will find many yachts in Tiha Harbour near Cavtat, in Donji and Gornji Molunat there are none. These bays, eleven miles further along the inaccessible cliffs of Konavno towards Cavtat, or almost seven miles from Oštar Point on Prevlaka, are the only places to anchor on this stretch of coastline. But yachts sailing under a foreign flag, after checking out in Cavtat, must take the shortest route to leave Croatian waters, unless needs dictate otherwise (the same applies after initial registration), and so do not stop here, and boats sailing in Croatian waters usually start in Cavtat, as the most southerly destination, and return there. So there are only rare visitors to the Molunat bays. They are interesting bays, offering good shelter, taken together. I prefer Donji Molunat. It is seven cable lengths long, surrounded by steep cliffs, covered in dense woods right down to the sea, with the odd house hidden on the shore, and is an ideal spot to bathe in the turquoise, clear sea, or spend the night at anchor, unless the tramontana or maestral is blowing, because it is exposed to both. Yet it offers good shelter from the jugo. In the middle of the bay, the depth is about 20 metres, and towards the base, 10 metres. Anchor in the sandy and silty bed, covered in sea grass, and when the bura is blowing, tie up stern to shore. There are several dolphins on the south shore. Gornji Molunat harbour, sheltered by the islets of Veliki Školj and Supetrič, is exposed to the jugo, especially in the outer section, where waves form, but is well protected from W and SW winds. It is more usual to anchor close to the west shore, by Veliki Školj, because there is a cable running along the floor near the east shore. On the shore of Gornji Molunat there is a not particularly attractive village, with several new buildings, but you can go ashore if you need to stock up or get a meal.
