If you anchor in the north harbour of Cavtat, Tiha, you will often be in the company of the largest yachts sailing the Adriatic. There are sailing boats of 50 or 60 metres, even larger motorised yachts, and the last time I was there, in the summer of 2009, a futuristic 120 metre yacht, designed by the famous Philippe Starck, was sitting at anchor for two days, waiting for its owner, the Russian billionaire Andrej Melničenko. The owners of these large yachts fly in to nearby Čilip airport in private jets, take speedboats from Cavtat, board their vessels and move on to beneath the walls of Dubrovnik, or further north. These vessels usually anchor in front of the bay, at depths between 20 and 30 metres. Ordinary sailors like me anchor in the bay itself, in the outer section, where the depths are between 4 and 11 metres, because the inner section is occupied by local boats. There are usually a score of yachts at anchor, and for many of them, Tiha is either the first or last stop on an Adriatic cruise. The last harbourmaster’s office and customs post before Montenegro is located in Cavtat, so this is the usual place to register or check out yachts and their crews. But there is room for everyone, as the bay is large, and well sheltered from all winds except the bura. Then it is better to move to Cavtat Harbour, to moorings on the waterfront or to a place to anchor. The bed in Tiha is silty and sandy, partially covered in sea grass, with good purchase. To the south, it is protected by Rat Point, covered in thick pine and cypress woods, with a footpath and bathing area close by. As you sail in front of Cavtat Harbour on your way to Tiha, watch out for Mala Seka Rock, which is unmarked, 120 metres W of Rat Point. There are many villas along the shoreline in the inner section of the bay, and to the north are some of the Cavtat hotels and beaches. Further northwest, there are some pretty beaches which you can only reach from the sea, so when I anchor here, I visit them by dinghy. I also visit the islet of Supetar, just a mile away, where there is a small restaurant, and in the evening, I enjoy a good meal in Galija restaurant and a walk around Cavtat.
