This large bay has a particularly interesting appearance. If you see it from a height, as I have done, and have no other points of reference, you might think you were in a tropical sea. It looks like a lagoon, sheltered by coral atolls. The sea in Sakarun Bay on the southeast side is turquoise, framed by a sandy beach. The bay is sheltered on all sides. On the northwest side, the waves break on a slender, arching beach, in places forming shingle embankments, while on the south side, which is dominated by one of the most famous Adriatic lighthouses, Veli Rat, a peninsula densely wooded with pines extends for several hundred metres. The village of Veli Rat is further south, and to the north is Verunić, with shops and taverns. If your draught is less than 2.2 metres you can stay in lake-like Čuna Bay, which is completely enclosed and sheltered. It is too shallow for vessels with a deeper draught. The maximum depth is 3.5 metres, so it is mostly used by motor boats and smaller sailboats. The buoys fixed here are helpful. However, I prefer to drop anchor in Pantera, or moor to one of the dozens of buoys fixed along the occupied, you can drop anchor at a depth of 5 or 10 metres anywhere along the shore. The sandy and silty bed provides good purchase. The bay is protected from all winds except a bura or strong tramontana. Although there are always lots of boats here in summer, they are never packed close together, as can happen in other bays. There is a pleasant walk through the pines and past the little jetties to the lighthouse. If they let you climb up to the top, which they sometimes do, if they are not too busy, you will see Veli Rat at your feet, Pantera looking close enough to touch and the southwest coast of Dugi Otok fading away towards the Kornati Islands. You can reach Verunić or the village of Veli Rat easily by dinghy, if you want a good meal. The taverns in both places are excellent, but my favourite is DM, owned by Dragan Galošić. You will find good, locally caught fish here, as you will in all the small villages on the islands. You can also anchor in front of Soline village at the end of Solišćica Harbour. The depth in the harbour is between 5 and 10 metres, and the sandy bed provides good purchase. Elsewhere, the depth is too great, sometimes plunging to over 40 metres. Solišćica Harbour is well sheltered from the bura and maestral, but it is completely exposed to the tramontana, which creates high waves and unpleasant sailing conditions. In such conditions, you should seek shelter in Lučica Cove on the west shore. There, the bed is silty and the anchor will hold well. There is not much to do on shore. The village, which owes its name to the saltmines, and in which there is a 15th century church and an old schoolhouse, has no particular charm, and has now become a rather characterless collection of newer houses and holiday apartments.
