One of the most unspoilt corners of the island of Hvar, on the north side of Stari Grad Bay, preserved from any kind of development. Old-fashioned sailors who enjoy peace and quiet will choose this bay, but they should also have some experience, for if the wind gets up, they may have to spend the night on watch in the cockpit. If you decide to stop here, you can spend your time following the example of experienced Croatian recreational sailors, which means relaxing, reading, swimming or carrying out small jobs on your boat. Tiha Harbour comprises four bays and several coves, ten in all, and is safe, providing shelter from all winds. Some places are better than others, depending on the prevailing wind. When the maestral or W winds are blowing, the west side of the bay is best, and during the bura, the east side. The two arms in the middle, Srednja Lokva and Veli Dolac, are safe in all weather. But remember that the Biokovo bura can reach high speeds and strengths, and will reach right into the bay, so be on your guard. You should tie up to the shore if it is blowing. In general, drop anchor close to the shore, at a depth of around 10 metres, in the sandy bed, which is covered in sea grass in places. In the centre of the bay, the depth is about 30 metres, so it is only suitable for large vessels. It is two and half miles to Stari Grad, so if you decide to go shopping by dinghy, allow enough time. On your way back, particular if you have a small dinghy, the prow will be buffeted by the waves of the maestral and headway will be slow. Although there are hardly any houses in Tiha Bay, there is a tavern we recommend, Tonka’s, in Hoboni Cove, and an excursion centre on Mlaki Rat. There are buoys in Zavala Cove, a mile towards Stari Grad, and you can also anchor there.
