Rogoznica

Rogoznica

This spacious bay, which extends more than two miles inland, is best known to sailors today for its large, well-equipped marina, Frapa, and for the moorings on the waterfront in the heart of the village on the embankment joining the mainland to the island of Kopara. This was an important harbour and anchorage in ancient times. Greek and Roman galleys were frequent visitors, the Uskoks kept their boats here, the Venetian galleys used it as a base, as did the Austro-Hungarian and later the Yugoslav navies. Rogoznica has also always been an important fishing centre, and still is. During the past thirty years, part of the coastline has been smothered by too much construction, and some areas have been turned into holiday resorts. Even so, there are still quiet, unspoilt corners to be found, where you can anchor comfortably. One is by the wooded peninsula of Gradina, which protects the harbour from W winds, where you will find buoys for mooring, and another is in front of the first marina jetty you come to. This is not a bad choice, as you will be well sheltered and undisturbed by the vast amount of yachting traffic entering and leaving the marina. The bed under the buoys is rocky, so it would be difficult to anchor there. It used to be possible to anchor opposite the marina, at the base of Solina Bay, at a depth of between 3 and 8 metres, but this is no longer allowed. It is no great loss, as you would feel cramped and there is no privacy. East of Kopara is another option, where the sandy bed is between 10 and 15 metres deep, but where you will be exposed to the bura. You can also sail to the base of the east section of Šibenik Harbour Bay, Stupin Bay, and anchor at a depth of between 5 and 10 metres, in the sandy bed. If the bura is blowing, you should tie up stern to shore. Really large yachts anchor in the middle of the bay, between Gradina and Ražanj, at a depth of up to 40 metres. Wherever you choose to anchor in this large bay, you will have the marina services, shops and restaurants at your disposal.
