If you drop anchor here, you will be closer to the open sea than in any other anchorage on the Adriatic. Krijal is in fact a passage between the outer side of Premuda, the most distant island reached from Zadar, and the series of small and large reefs (Hripa, Masarine, Plitka Sika, Bračići and Mala Sika) which run parallel to the shore and form a sheltered lagoon, with a maximum depth of 5 metres. Its floor is partly sandy and partly covered in sea grass, so the sea is all possible shades of blue, for which the Adriatic is famed throughout the world. When I first came here about twenty years ago, on a late summer’s afternoon, I was speechless. Drop anchor here and enjoy the beauty of it all. It is quite safe, if you take into account the fact that the reefs will protect you from waves, but not wind. The anchor will hold well, and in recent years, some buoys have been added, so in normal weather conditions, this harbour is safe. The sea is particularly clear and it is a lovely place to bathe, whether straight from your boat, or by taking the dinghy to the reefs, where there are some little beaches. A few years ago, a new ferry dock was built next to the harbour in Krijal, where locals from Premuda keep their boats (Premuda is a little further from the sea, on the ridge of the island). There are two taverns providing good food but rather loud music in the evenings (I would like to take this opportunity of asking them to turn down the volume a bit…). The one right above the harbour, owned by the concessionaire for Krijal Harbour, has a good menu and a fine view of the harbour. If you walk up the hill to the church, you will have a view of the sea on both sides of the island.
