Less than half a mile south of Krivica, as you round the point which separates it from the next bay, is Balvanida. Although it is a pretty, safe haven, it is never as full of boats at anchor as Krivica. But whenever I have gone there, I have found a large excursion boat sitting at anchor, sometimes for hours. I suppose this is a sort of sailing fashion, comparable to what used to happen on trunk roads, before motorways were built. Bus drivers, truck drivers and car drivers all had their favourite places to stop and eat. But if you stop in Balvanida Bay, you will not go wrong. The bay is less indented than Krivica, and winds in a similar S-shape, but in the opposite direction, facing east. The shores are steeper and are covered in undergrowth and pinewoods. The sea here is clear and excellent for swimming and diving, particularly near the small cave on the west shore. In terms of anchoring, the bay is more exposed to the maestral and tramontana. If the wind is blowing hard from the NW, anchor in the W section, where the depth is about 10 metres, and tie up stern to shore. The east section is the better choice in other winds, because you can drop anchor in the middle, at the entrance, or move further in and tie up stern to shore. The depth reduces sharply towards the base, to only 2 or 3 metres. The bed is sandy and the outer section of the bay is covered in sea grass. There is a beach at the base of the bay, although it is nothing special, and there is a jetty where you can tie up your dinghy. A short walk through the woods will bring you to Balvanida tavern, which looks like a small ranch, where you can enjoy island lamb and goat, or fresh fish. A few hundred metres further south is Plijeski Cove, with a lovely sandy beach.
