I like stopping in Žukova, a bay almost a kilometre long, on the most indented stretch of the Hvar coastline. It lies in the narrow section of the Hvar Channel, where W and S winds are strong, and provides excellent shelter from these winds and from the bura. I love anchoring in the most southerly of its six arms, where I make fast to the shore and swim to the rock slabs and little beach. This part of the bay is uninhabited. There is just a small fishing hut on the rocks. The few houses and boats in the eastern arm bring to mind the Adriatic fishing villages of long ago. You can anchor throughout Žukova Bay, in the sandy bed, at depths between 5 and 20 metres. The best spot is in front of one of the southern or western arms. Most of the bay used to be surrounded by thick pine forests, but following a series of forest fires, they remain only on the south shore. It is not usually busy here, particularly at night. During the day, visiting speedboats and small boats arrive from Bol, which is three miles away, and sometimes windsurfers venture this far, but at night, there is little or no activity.
