The best known in a series of lovely bays suitable for anchoring on the first five miles of shoreline on the south coast of Brač, as you leave the Gates of Split and pass Ražanj Point, sailing towards Bol. However, you cannot drop anchor in all ot them. Maslinova Bay, which is very pretty and deeply recessed, has been completely taken over by tuna-farming. There are also cages in front of Smrka Bay, though you can anchor in the west arm. You can also try Osibova, Lučice, Krušica, or Blaca. Lučice comprises five coves in a large bay. The usual spot to drop anchor is in the most westerly arm, and this is a popular location with Split boat owners. Up to about ten years ago, they would come over together in about twenty boats, tie up stern to shore and stay for days, enjoying a mini-holiday. However, they have been gradually pushed out by tourists on larger yachts and charter vessels, particularly since the placing of a score of buoys. If you choose to drop anchor near the shore and tie up stern to shore, the sandy bed is between 7 and 10 metres deep. There are buoys further out, up to about 20 metres depth. There are many holiday homes on the shore, but they are surrounded by pinewoods, so you will not be greatly aware of them. Members of the Lemešić family are among the summer residents. They run Smrčeva restaurant, right by the sea, and also own the concession for anchoring in the west arm. I should say immediately that this is an exemplary anchorage – maintaining the quality of the sea and the safety of sailors are the priorities. The concessionaires can get you supplies from Milna, a kilometre and a half away. There are also buoys in the east arm, belonging to a different concessionaire. If you prefer not to use the concession areas, there are three other arms in Lučica which are safe for anchoring. Choose the most suitable, according to the winds. If the maestral is blowing, the most westerly arm is best, but in S winds, the most easterly. You will be safe from the bura in all three. Drop anchor at a depth of about 10 metres. There are several places where you can tie up stern to shore. The bed is mostly sandy. If you enjoy long-line fishing, as I do, Lučice is a good choice. The shoreline, particularly towards the west, is good for fishing and scuba-diving. On the inner side of Križ Point there is a cave, which is a favourite spot with scuba-divers.
