This is a deep bay, recessed a mile inland, providing good shelter from all winds except the bura. Even then, you can find shelter in Maslinica and Podkamenica coves. The bays of Nečujam have been popular with Split sailors for seventeen centuries. The emperor Diocletian had a fish pool here, where the choicest fish were bred for his table, and his fishermen most probably spent the night in the bay. The tradition has continued and many of the present inhabitants of Split, the Dalmatian metropolis only eight miles away, who keep a boat with a cabin, have probably spent at least one night here. Their example is followed by countless others, so there are always boats in Nečujam. Sadly, things have changed since the days of Diocletian. Nečujam has been built up in recent years, and holiday homes have taken over Podkamenice and are spilling over into Maslinica. Only Piškera is still spared building projects. This cove is most deeply recessed and is the site of the former fish pool. There are only two houses here. But the atmosphere has not been spoiled, nor the quality of the sea. Most people drop anchor in Maslenica, where you should tie up stern to shore on the south side. The bed is sandy and provides good purchase, and the depth is around 6 metres in this section. The south shore, in the outer section, is covered in ancient pinewoods, which will provide shade in the cockpit during the afternoon. There are houses and a landing area at the base of the bay. You can also drop anchor a little further away, in the outer section of Piškera, in front of the entrance to Maslinica, at a depth of 10 metres. You cannot sail further into Piškera, due to the submerged remains of the fish pool walls. Not only would you cause damage to a historical artefact, but you would run your boat aground. You can also drop anchor in Podkamenica, which is more or less occupied by permanently anchored local boats. Of course, larger vessels anchor in the more open section of the harbour, at a depth of 20 metres or more. If the bura is blowing, go to the peninsula protecting Nečujam to the east. The coves occupied by local boats have a good atmosphere, with many sailors from Split providing hearty company. They come here to relax on small boats, moor three or four together, and in the evening, get together for food, drink and Dalmatian klapa singing and a good time is had by all.
