If you want to visit Rovinj, the most picturesque of the Istrian towns, and yet enjoy a peaceful night on your boat, surrounded by dense woods, there is a simple solution. Only a few hundred metres south of the ACI marina is the lovely islet of Sveta Katarina, with Muntrav Point, which shelters Lon Bay. The bay is exposed only to the west, and provides a peaceful anchorage, even in the sailing season. Sometimes larger yachts stop here. They tend to anchor closer to Katarina, leaving smaller vessels the option of anchoring closer to the shore, at a depth of between 8 and 10 metres, or in the middle of the bay, where the depth is 15 metres and the bed sandy, covered in sea grass. However, you should watch out for Muntrav Rock, about 400 metres W of the point. Although there are hotel complexes on the shore, the planners set them back from the beaches, in thick woods, surrounded by parks, and they are almost invisible from the sea. When you have settled at anchor, take your choice of the many pleasures Rovinj offers. There are excellent restaurants, such as Giannino’s and Puntulina, run by super-chef Corado Pellizzer, or Veli Jože, Santa Croce, Orca, and many others. Enjoy a drink on the walls of the old town, or visit Grisija Gallery. Walk along the waterfront and through the narrow streets leading to St. Euphemia’s Church. Rovinj also has a small, well-stocked fish market, which I visit in the early morning, whenever I can.
