This anchorage, which extends deep inland, is one of my favourites. There are three reasons for this. Firstly, there are fantastic landscapes on the way through Sveti Ante Channel, the Bay of Šibenik, Prukljansko Straits and Prukljansko Lake, followed by the canyon of the River Krka. Secondly, there is the town of Skradin itself, known as Scardona in ancient times, the capital of Liburnia, and the harbour of the Croatian navy in the 13th century, a town rich in history and with a typical coastal character, nestling in the river rushes, alive with the chirping of crickets and the croaking of bullfrogs. Thirdly, this is the easiest route into Krka National Park, with its famous waterfalls, which you should definitely visit. That means anchoring in front of Skradin for at least two days. You will not regret it. There is also a well-managed marina in Skradin, but we are here for the anchorages. You can anchor almost anywhere, as there are no navigation courses, and the silty bed provides good purchase. The usual spot is the gentle bend of the River Krka, southwest of the marina, or opposite it, i.e. east of the mariW bank of the Krka na, in front of Stara Vozarica and Sridnja Draga coves, where the depth is mostly between 4 and 5 metres and the shelter good, even when the bura is blowing hard (though the jugo creates low waves). Watch out for the river current, particularly after heavy rain, when the river rises and increases in speed. If you anchor along the west shore of the canyon, you can also tie up stern to shore. You should take into account the presence of large yachts here, for which there are no moorings in summer on the waterfront in Skradin. But the largest, hundred-metre vessels, usually anchor in Prukljansko Lake. When you have dropped anchor, there is plenty to do and see. First, have a swim, directly from your boat, in the clear, green river water. Then pay a visit to Skradin, which you can reach by dinghy. In summer, the town is bustling, full of sailors and day-trippers, and you should climb up to the fort above the town and enjoy the view over the river. You can stock up on fresh fruit and vegetables, and I recommend an evening meal in Bonaca, run by Ivo Bulat. Don’t miss the excellent fish caught in the lake – try the eel, Skradin risotto or shellfish. The next day should be set aside for a visit to the national park. You have to use the park boats to get there, and however many times I go, I am always impressed. The waterfalls are unique, and you can bathe beneath them, walk along the forest paths, visit the rustic village, the hydro-electric plant and take a trip to Visovac island, with its monastery, then move on to Roški waterfalls and have a snack in the tavern. And this is only part of the range of things to do and see which will make your visit unforgettable.
