Sailing from north to south, we could make our first stop in one of the marinas in Novigrad or Dajla Bay, but our preference is Mirna Harbour. It takes its name from the River Mirna, which flows into it. It is a wide bay, exposed to the west, and well protected from all winds except a strong bura, W or SW wind. In contrast to other bays, the view from a boat at anchor extends far inland. Above the fertile valley, the long viaduct of the Istrian “Y” highway is the dominant feature. A quarry and container terminal can be seen on the west shore, and a tourist resort and campsite on the east shore. In addition, a road passes right by the mouth of the river. It might not sound very peaceful, but it is. The only disturbances to boats at anchor are the speedboats towing water-skiers along the bay. But by five or six in the afternoon they stop and peace descends. Mirna Harbour is spacious, which means you will not hear the sound of traffic or noise from the tourist resort. The best place to anchor is along the SE shore, between Valeta and Tarska Coves, where the depth is between 5 and 15 metres. As you approach Tarska, the bed becomes softer and more clayey, which means the anchor will not hold well if the wind rises. Towards Valeta, the bed is silty, with good purchase and no fear of the anchor dragging.
