I must be honest and admit that I have never anchored in Strižnja, the east section of the large Kornati bay behind the islet of Strižnjak, unless I count letting down 40 metres of chain when there were no moorings in front of Darko’s restaurant. My weakness for the fare offered by the Murter-Belgrade couple who keep this tavern was stronger than the desire to drop anchor in Strižnja. The question is: will I do it again? I have already decided next time to leave the boat further off and use the dinghy to get to Darko’s, because there is now no need to let down the anchor chain. There are several buoys in this sheltered spot. They are anchored at a depth of five or six metres near the island of Strižnjak, which partially protects this charming Kornati bay to the south, whether from the waves of the maestral which can lash the bay, or from squalls, which are a constant danger on the Kornati Islands Islands. If there are no buoys available, you can always drop anchor nearby. The depth near the island is between 5 and 12 metres, where the bed is sandy, but you can also drop anchor in the north section of the bay, at a depth of 20 metres, and tie up stern to shore. You can sail around Strižnjak on both sides, in the lee of the island, and the depth in the east passage is 5 metres. Another option is anchoring a few hundred metres to the west, in Kravljačica Cove. This is a good choice if the maestral or tramontana are strong. The bed is also sandy, though somewhat deeper, about 15 metres, and you should tie up stern to shore. Strižnja is known for its two small restaurants – Darko’s and Quattro – and during the Italian ferragosta there can be more than fifty boats moored on the little jetties, at a depth of about three metres, or sitting at anchor. So come in early summer or autumn, when the place is much quieter. Then you will be able to chat with Darko, a man of Kornati through and through, who might tell you his fishing tales with enthusiasm. He will probably get out some yellowing photographs of the biggest fish he has ever caught – even Hemingway would not be ashamed of it.
